Midwestern Marx
Jun 2, 2024
In his speech, Midwestern Marx Institute Co-Director Carlos Garrido reminds the audience that Martin Luther King Jr. spoke how the Vietnam War undermines the prospects for a just America by redirecting vital resources away from domestic needs. Garrido argues that, rather than embrace King's vision of democracy and justice, the U.S. celebrates a sanitized version of King that ignores his anti-war and anti-poverty stances. He criticizes the current economic and political systems for perpetuating division and exploitation, particularly among the working class, and draws parallels between domestic and international struggles, such as the Palestinian cause. Garrido concludes with a call for unity and organized resistance against the entrenched powers of corporations and corrupt politicians.
